Can Massage Therapy Relieve Joint Pain?

For those suffering from joint pain, finding relief is a priority. Whether you suffer from tendonitis, bursitis, arthritis pain or even fibromyalgia, massage therapy can bring some much needed relief to the pain and inflammation that comes with these conditions.

According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, when performed by a trained and licensed professional, massage therapy can help to control pain, increase joint motion and even improve muscle and tendon flexibility.

There are a few different types of massage that can help with joint pain. Swedish massage is helpful as it increases blood flow and healthy blood flow can promote healing by reducing inflammation, often the biggest culprit in the cause of joint pain.

Hot and cold stone therapy is also beneficial as the combination of hot and cold can increase circulation. Myofascial release is a technique that can also stimulate the movement of lymphatic fluid throughout the body. By lengthening the tissue with myofascial release, the muscle fibers have more room to stretch and lengthen. Another good option is trigger point therapy which targets muscles that are strained as a result of constant pressure.

And the research seems to back up the hype. In a 2021 study, researchers examined the effects of Swedish massage on people with rheumatoid arthritis. Participants reported lower pain scores and reduced use of painkillers at the end of eight weeks and one month after the study.

Another study conducted in 2015 on those with arthritic knee pain participants reported better range of motion and lower pain levels immediately after a massage done with moderate pressure.

If you suffer from joint pain and are looking for relief, talk to your massage therapist about some of these techniques. After a thorough health history, your therapist can help you determine which technique is right for you. Don’t continue to live in pain, make your appointment today!
