Massage for Chemotherapy Patients

Patients undergoing chemotherapy are truly going through some of the toughest times of their life. Chemotherapy is an intense and rigorous process that can break down even the best of us. Although chemotherapy is used to treat cancer it more likely than not can produce undesirable effects on the patient’s body. Massage can be used as a treatment to relax and lessen the pain chemotherapy patients are experiencing. As with any massage treatment make sure to consult with your physician before you decide to get massage for the pain you may be experiencing.

Typically, patients undergoing intense chemotherapy experience a heightened sense of anxiety, pain in places they normally don’t have pain and an overall weakness throughout the body. Massage is recommended to chemotherapy patients by many physicians. In addition to creating a relaxing feeling throughout the body, massage can fend off nausea and help monitor and control pain.

Before receiving your massage make sure your massage room is clean. This is very important. Chemotherapy can greatly compromise your immune system and you do not want to put yourself at risk for an infection that could prove deadly. Also politely ask your massage therapist if they are sick or have battled any illnesses recently. You want to keep yourself as safe as possible.

Massage therapy can producing relaxing and rejuvenating effects for those going through the tribulations of chemotherapy. But as noted, please make sure to be safe when deciding to choose massage.
